The hymn "It Is Well with My Soul," originally titled "When Peace, Like a River," was penned by American lawyer and Presbyterian elder Horatio G. Spafford in 1873. The music was composed by Philip P. Bliss, who named the tune "Ville du Havre" after the ship that sank, claiming the lives of Spafford's four daughters.
The hymn is famous for the deeply tragic events that inspired its creation. Spafford had already endured the loss of his son and a financial ruin from the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. In 1873, he sent his wife and four daughters ahead on a trip to Europe. Their ship, the S.S. Ville du Havre, collided with another vessel and sank, killing all four of his children along with 222 other people. His wife, Anna, survived and sent a famous telegram to him that simply read, "Saved alone."
On his voyage to meet his grieving wife, Spafford was inspired to write the hymn as his ship passed over the area where his daughters had perished. The lyrics express profound faith and peace in the face of immense sorrow, with the most famous lines being: "When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul.'"
